Destination wedding in Kerala: backwaters, hills and beaches, planned from Pune

Kerala offers water, green hills and a long coast in one state, and it is a long way from Pune. This page covers the settings, the months, the guest journey and what drives the cost.

In short

A destination wedding in Kerala is usually set on the backwaters around Alleppey and Kumarakom, in the hills at places such as Munnar, or by the sea. The cooler, drier months from about December to February are most popular, and the monsoon starts around June. Gātha plans Kerala weddings from Pune with video reviews and an on-ground team.

Backwater, hill or beach: choosing the setting

A destination wedding in Kerala is first a choice between three kinds of place, and each changes the way the days run.

Backwaters

The backwaters around Alleppey (Alappuzha) and Kumarakom are the picture most families have in mind. Canals, lagoons and coconut-lined banks give a green, calm setting, and ceremonies are usually held on a waterfront lawn or a resort deck facing the water. Houseboats are part of the scene, but they suit small groups for a stay or a short cruise, not a seated ceremony for a large guest list. Many backwater properties are reached by narrow roads and sometimes by boat, so ask how luggage, elderly guests and vendors' equipment get there.

Hill stations

Hill settings such as Munnar offer tea slopes, mist and cooler air. They suit smaller, close-knit celebrations. Roads are winding, journeys from the airport are long, and large trucks carrying stage and sound equipment cannot reach every property, so ask the venue about access before you plan a big set-up.

Beach and coast

Beach stretches such as Kovalam and Varkala combine sand, cliffs and sea views. Open-air ceremonies depend on tide, wind and light, and it is wise to confirm with the venue what a beach set-up involves and who arranges any permission that it needs.

The guide to wedding venues in Kerala lists the questions to put to any property of these types.

When to hold a Kerala destination wedding

Kerala has two rainy periods. The southwest monsoon arrives around June and runs through much of the following months, and a lighter northeast monsoon follows around October and November. Rain is heavy at the peak of the first, and outdoor ceremonies become unreliable. The drier months, from about December to February, are the most settled and are the ones most families choose.

The coast is warm and humid for most of the year, and the hill stations are cooler. That shapes the programme: a mid-day outdoor ceremony on the coast is comfortable in the cooler months and uncomfortable in the hot, humid weeks before the monsoon, which fall roughly in March to May.

Winter dates close early. Gātha advises six to twelve months of lead time for a full wedding, and peak-season destination dates are often taken a year ahead. Kerala is no exception, so begin the enquiry early and keep two alternative weekends in hand.

Getting guests from Pune to Kerala

Kerala is a long way from Pune. It is a considerable journey by road or rail, and most guests will fly, usually to one of the state's airports, then continue by road. Whether a direct flight exists on your dates should be checked on current schedules, because services change. Plan on at least a full day of travel for many guests, and do not schedule a major function on the day they arrive.

Transfers matter more here than in most places. The distance from an airport to a backwater resort or a hill station can be several hours, and the road may be narrow. Group transfers should be timed to flight arrivals, with water, food and a clear meeting point.

Decide, as early as possible, how many nights your guests will stay. A long journey for a one-night stay feels like a poor trade, and two to three nights lets the guests rest before the first function. The guides to destination wedding guest accommodation and the destination wedding guest list help set the numbers.

Kerala customs and how a planner treats them

Wedding customs in Kerala differ by community and by family, and Hindu, Christian and Muslim families each follow their own ceremonies. Gātha does not claim expertise in any one community's rituals, and it will not tell a family how its own ceremony should run. What it does is take direction from the family, the priest or the officiant, and plan the timing, the space, the seating and the guests' movements around the ceremony they describe.

If you are from another part of India and marrying in Kerala, or if a Kerala family's own tradition is being combined with yours, tell the team early. The programme can then hold both in one flow, with enough time between rituals and a clear brief for the people who will run them.

What a Kerala destination wedding cost depends on

A destination wedding in Kerala has no single price, and this page gives none for venues, décor or catering. These are the choices that move the total:

  • The setting: a backwater resort, a hill property and a beach property have different room stock, rules and fixed charges.
  • The season: the drier months carry the highest demand, and the monsoon months bring weather risk.
  • Guest travel: flights, transfers and the number of nights are often a heavy and overlooked line.
  • The supplier base: for remote properties, florals, sound and equipment may have to be brought in from other cities, which adds transport.

Gātha's planning fee is tiered by the overall investment. It begins at Rs 2,00,000 for weddings of Rs 30 to 60 lakh, Rs 3,00,000 for Rs 60 lakh to 1 crore, and Rs 5,00,000 for Rs 1 crore and above. Venue, décor and vendor costs sit in the family's own budget and are shown transparently. Gātha does not take weddings with a total investment under Rs 30 lakh.

Planning a Kerala wedding from Pune

Gātha is a boutique wedding atelier in Pune. For a Kerala celebration it works by video walkthroughs of the shortlisted venues, digital drawings and 3D layouts, a planning dashboard and video reviews with the family, then places an on-ground team at the destination. This describes how the team plans such a wedding. It is not a list of past Kerala weddings.

Because of the distance, one site visit is advisable once you have chosen a single venue, preferably at the same time of day as the main function. Gātha does not offer venue booking on its own. To see how the working relationship runs, read the page on a Kerala wedding planner, and for the general method, the guide on how to plan a destination wedding. To start, send your dates, scale and investment through the application page.

Questions people ask

The drier months, roughly December to February, are the most settled and the most popular. The southwest monsoon begins around June, and a lighter northeast monsoon follows around October and November. Winter dates close early.
It depends on the property. Many backwater venues have limited rooms and narrow access roads, and houseboats suit small groups rather than a full ceremony. Ask each venue how many rooms it holds, how vendors reach it and what the rain plan is.
Most guests will fly, then continue by road, and the journey takes a full day for many. Check current flight schedules for your dates. Keep the arrival day free of major events.
There is no single figure. The total depends on the setting, season, guest count and travel. Gātha's planning fee starts at Rs 2,00,000 for weddings of Rs 30 to 60 lakh, and venue, décor and vendor costs are shown separately.
Gātha does not claim expertise in any community's rituals. It takes direction from the family and the priest or officiant, and plans the timing, space and guest movement around the ceremony they describe.
